XenServer Linux Desktop (VDI) Tip

This past winter I switched from VMWare ESXi to XenServer for virtualization at my workplace.  Until a few weeks ago no one had asked me for a Linux virtual desktop on this system.  When I finally gave it a try I found that the templates for creating Linux VMs did not have the necessary video devices to run a graphical desktop.  X would not start.

It eventually occurred to me that desktop oriented Linux distributions are designed to run on hardware optimized for Windows.  I took a Windows VM, installed Linux on it and everything started to work.

So, that's the tip.  If you want to run a Linux desktop VM on XenServer and connect to it with VNC or RDP use a Windows template to create the VM.
