Combining Audio Interfaces with JACK on Linux

At Ohio Linux Fest I got a question about combining inexpensive built-in and USB audio interfaces.  I gave a rather unsatisfying answer; "It's possible but not easy.  If there is any way you can buy an interface with the ins and outs you need it will be less frustrating."

I didn't know that the basics of JACK interface aggregation are documented on the JACK website, here, http://jackaudio.org/multiple_devices.

Keep in mind that JACK does not just run on GNU/Linux.  The above document addresses JACK on OS X.  JACK also runs on Solaris, FreeBSD, and Windows.
